i-Vu® Lightning Protection Board

Surge protection for reliable BACnet MS/TP and RS‑485 network operation
The i‑Vu® Lightning Protection Board (PROT485) protects building automation controllers from electrical surges and transient events, helping ensure stable communication and long‑term reliability of RS‑485/BACnet MS/TP networks.

i-Vu® Lightning Protection Board

Network Device
Carrier's ancillary network devices ensure optimum performance for BACnet MS/TP and other EIA-485 networks. These devices install easily and work together to amplify data signals and provide surge protection, bias and termination to any EIA-485 network.

i-Vu® Lightning Protection Board

Electrical Surge Protection

Provides surge protection for controllers installed within 250 ft (76 m) of the protection board.

Network Reliability Enhancement

Helps reduce damage and communication disruptions caused by lightning strikes and electrical transients.

Strategic Network Placement

Designed for installation at building entry/exit points or near critical controllers for maximum protection.

Simple Installation

Compact design with removable screw terminals for easy wiring and maintenance.

Power

Not required (passive protection device)

Network Requirement

What does the PROT485 protect against?

It protects RS‑485/BACnet MS/TP networks from lightning‑induced surges and electrical transients.

Where should the PROT485 be installed?

At each location where network wiring enters or exits a building, or within 250 ft of controllers for optimal protection.

Are the protection fuses replaceable?

Yes. The board includes replaceable 0.5 A time‑lag fuses to restore protection after a surge event.

Is this required for all MS/TP networks?

It is strongly recommended for outdoor wiring, long cable runs, or lightning‑prone environments.
